How to clean startup programs from your windows 8 computer

Microsoft Windows 8 / 8.1 has been built for providing better speeds than its predecessors. Though, in many occasions you may have noticed, even Windows 8 powered PCs starts running slow over time, and of course it’s really frustrating the way that computers take several minutes to start up. Sometimes this happens because of hardware issues like faulty storage device, insufficient memory, etc. But, in Windows computers, more often startup programs are the real culprits. Every time you install a new application on your Desktop PC or laptop, you definitely goanna end up with more new startup apps. Though, some of them are essential for safe startup, many serve no purpose by being run at startup.

Before I start explaining the methods to cleanup unwanted Windows startup as, you must know that there isn’t any magic window to disable them all at once. Following are the solutions to turn off all startup items from your Windows 8 computer.

Cleanup Windows 8 Startup Folder

First of all, you have to remove unwanted items from your startup folder. To do it, navigate to C:\Users\\\AppData \Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\. Once you are in startup folder, remove all shortcuts of applications you don’t want to run at startup. Here you are deleting only the shortcut, not the application itself. So don’t worry, deleting shortcuts of startup programs will not corrupt the Operating System.

Note: By default, AppData directory is hidden. If you have trouble finding it, go to views tab from any folder window and click the ‘hidden items’ check box to make visible all hidden directories and files.

Disable unwanted Startup services

Actually, there are many services working in background to give support for applications you installed on your computer. Many of these services start working automatically at startup. Even though you need several of them, many aren’t quite necessary. In fact, these services may even make your computer too slow if they run in the background. Luckily, there is a way to block these services from running at startup. To do so, follow below steps:

Step 1: Press Windows+R buttons simultaneously to launch run box, type services.msc and click Ok.

Step 2: When Services window shows up, click on Extended tab down below in the window. Now you will get a list view of all startup services running on your computer, along with description of services in the left pane of window.

You’ll find this description extremely useful for deciding which services can be safely disabled, and which must run at startup.

Step 3: If you want to disable any service, right click and select Properties from the context menu that appears.

Step 4: In the Properties dialog box, click on the drop-down list with label ‘Startup Type’, and choose Manual from it so that app service remains disabled until you manually enable it via the console. If you want the service disabled for a while, then choose the option Disabled.

Once you have done it, restart the system for changes to take effect.

Use the Task Manager to disable hidden Startup Apps

As I said before, there isn’t any magic window currently available in operating system to find and remove / turn off all unnecessary startup programs. You may have been successful in cleaning up the shortcuts of unnecessary software from the startup folder, but it won’t disable them all. The best option to identify and disable most of the hidden auto-start programs is Windows 8’s Task Manager.

To run it, press Ctrl+Alt+Del simultaneously and click on Task Manager, then click the Startup tab when task manager window appears.

From that tab, you will get the list view of applications run when windows starts up, along with Publisher name, current status, and impact scale of the software. The impact column is exceptionally useful to identify whether the impact of application on startup is High, Medium, or Low. When you find the right one, right click on the app name and choose Disable from the context menu.

Hack registry Windows 8 registry to optimize startup

Still you think any unnecessary program runs at startup, you might have to hack windows registry to turn off them. To do so, follow below steps:

Step 1: Press Windows key + R simultaneously to launch Run box, type regedit, and click Ok to launch registry editor.

Step 3: Now, in the right pane, you will be able to see a list of applications that run automatically when Windows boots in. Over the right side of window, there is a Data field that tells the name and directory path of the executable, and you can use it to identify and kill any programs. To kill any of them from the list, right click on the startup program, and choose Delete.

That’ it!!! Of course, above methods will certainly help make your slow Windows 8 powered desktop PC or laptop faster while reducing the startup time. But, keep in mind, tweaking registry and stopping services may negatively affect the working of system. So before you disable any service/program runs at startup, make sure you are turning off the right one. If you are not confident enough to follow above methods, there are dedicated startup program cleaners like Chameleon Startup Manger available out there to get the job done for you.
